Sometimes you walk through life not even realizing what’s going on around you because you’re so involved in it. Quite honestly, if you’re not extremely involved in your life to miss what’s going on around you, you need to find something to engulf you. It’s so exhilarating. I haven’t been blessed yet to have children, a marriage, or extremely rare vacations. Those things can make you so involved with life that you would miss the Undertaker retiring from wrestling.
Never get that involved!
But what I’m getting at, is that even if a family isn’t something that you revolve your life around, owning a business and taking care of your body can be the same concept. And that’s me. So it takes a good laugh, or a good lift, or a sushi eating contest to get you back to life.
Sometimes a quote can give you a huge Mike Tyson punch in the face. Therefore, I have 10 quotes that I constantly have stuck in the back of my head to remind myself to not get so caught up in life that I’ll miss that fun stuff. I can grind hard at my job and be cognitive of my surroundings too.
By the way, I stuck a funny pun with every quote just to hopefully give you a chuckle while you read.
Bonus: Mike Tyson’s best quote: “Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.”
1. “Just breathe.” ~The Universe
Quite honestly, this little life motto of mine has gotten me out of some pretty big predicaments involving stress in my life. It’s no Einstein quote. It’s no African proverb. To me however, lying in bed at night stressed out about the day before or the next day, I can say this to myself and just remember that life goes on and if you’re not breathing, then you’re dead.
It doesn’t hurt that Eddie Vedder wrote a gorgeous song titled this as well.
2. “I don’t know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everyone.” ~Bill Cosby
Before we go on judging this quote because Bill Cosby the pill-popper, or Bill Cosby the rapist said it so it’s not meaningful, for my sake let’s just pretend that Bill Cosby the Jello Pudding pop aficionado said this. Quite honestly, it’s the best quote ever regarding my business. In life, I don’t have to worry about pleasing people. If people don’t like me for me, than quite frankly it’s a smaller circle for me. And that’s not a bad thing.
However, in business, pleasing people is how you make money. So I’ve literally focused all my energy on pleasing people.
On the other hand, some people just literally are never pleased. And I tell you right now, if you’re running a small business, focus all of your attention and energy on the 99 people who are pleased with you working your ass off, and don’t give an ounce of energy to the one person who thinks you should work harder. Some money isn’t worth it and I’m a firm believer, that success isn’t built off of everyone liking you, it’s built off working hard and being as nice as you possible can be.
3. “Most people have no idea how good their body is designed to feel.” ~Unknown
I don’t know who said this, but man, it’s money. Quite honestly, it’s been the transition I’ve had in my training going into my 30’s. I’ve been doing mobilization workouts consistently for almost a year now (ROMWOD), I’ve cut out the hardcore mud races that leave my big-ass 240 pound frame hurting for months, and I’ve focused a lot of my diet and range of motion.
And guess what? I’m stronger than ever! This year I hit my PR squat, dead-lift, power clean, and I can still run a mile in under 8 minutes and row 2000M in under 7 minutes. So I’m sticking with this quote. Pounding myself into the ground because I felt like I needed that specific training to maintain my body and my conditioning is over. My body has never felt better and taking care of it is not about working out until you wake up in the morning sore. It’s about waking up every morning and feeling great.
4. “If you’re bored with life, if you don’t get up every morning with a burning desire to do things, you don’t have enough goals.” ~Lou Hotlz
This is like a “quote inception”. A quote within a quote. “It’s not hard to make life decisions when you know what the values are.”
There’s nothing more depressing than hearing one of my good friends talk about how they hate their job or bored with life, but refuse to do anything to change it. I’m a firm believer that everything that has happens to you on a daily basis is because of previous actions to you didn’t take responsibility for. If you’re bored, fix it man. Even if you can’t, the journey of trying to fix it is more rewarding than sitting around a campfire depressing everyone else around you.
5. “I used to think anyone doing anything weird was weird. Now I know that it is the people that call others weird that are weird.” ~Paul McCartney.
Life reference: I love kickball. I love WWE wrestling. I play in a bowling league. I love Lord of the Rings. I love ghost shows. I love board games. I want to learn how to play the banjo.
Choose your passions based of how they make you feel, not how they make others feels.
Most of all, I love America, because I love choosing what I want to love.
6. “This stuff may sound boring, but sometimes it’s the boring stuff that I remember the most.” ~Pixar’s ‘Up’
Give me chills every time I hear that little boy on the Pixar movie “Up” say it. Just think about it. . .
This “stuff” is what will mean the most when you are older. Dog walks. Baseball games. Movie nights. Your first hoodie of the season. Ok maybe that’s just me. . .
7. “You wasted $150,000 on an education you could have got for a buck fifty in late charges at the public library.” ~Good Will Hunting
How you like them apples? (My favorite movie quote of all time. Same movie).
Don’t get me wrong. If you have a degree and worked your ass off for it, you earned your spot on the map. Let’s keep in mind, it’s definitely something I couldn’t do.
But since my main passion for waking up this morning (refer to quote number 5), was to possible help you zone back in on life, is that you may not need all the bells and whistles of education to get to where you want to go. You can most certainly go a self taught route.
I spent 1 year in college and hated it. Find some people to motivate you and help me (hopefully like me), work hard, be nice to people (like we talked about earlier), never give up, and I promise you you’ll get there. Granted, it may take as long as a 12 year degree, but you’ll still get there.
There’s two people that really helped me in my fitness entrepreneuring that gave me great advice that sticks with me now, and I will always relay the information.
“It will take you 10 years to be able to sit down and have a successful operating business.” ~Craig Ballantyne
“It takes 10 years under the barbell and lifting weights to know exactly what the fuck you are doing.” ~Jason Beck
It takes time. It really does. But you can self teach your self with a dose of guidance from the people who experienced it to get you there.
I really hope this helps. And if anyone stands in your way that takes your focus on what’s most important in life, just throw a handful of peas in their face and say . . .
Be right back. Going to watch Good Will Hunting now. . .
This is where your body changes,
